Hi, I’m Jesse.
I’m a Neuro-different individual with a passion for nature and environmental education. Harnessing my variety of diverse skills and alternate ways of seeing situations for new approaches to working.
Im not only an ethologist and conservationist but also a teacher, researcher, ecologist, tracker and trails guide. With a special interest in human-animal co-existence, remote monitoring and a soft spot for studying some of those less beloved creatures that remain unseen by most, i approach each project and task with enthusiasm and fresh ideas.
Working predominantly between Northern Europe and Southern Africa, i balance my time between research, teaching and time in the field, pushing to expand my knowledge and skills every day.
My Approach to Life
Like with all good scientific moments, it all begins with an idea. What do i want to portray, learn, discover or achieve? Exploring different ways i can draw on my knowledge and skills to create something positive and worthwhile.
As a tactile learner, I am always very hands on with what I do. Whether that involves being up to my knees in a cold muddy ditch or assessing images and data, I like to be able to input something into all areas of a project.
I will always advocate for interdisciplinary collaborations and accessibility in all areas of conservation and nature learning. Ensuring that any barriers can be overcome and all voices can be heard in a way that honours the world we are set to protect.
Teaching
Working with students of all ages to inspire new ideas and understandings of the natural world. I like to remain flexible to each learner’s needs while covering core subject matter in a tangible way. Encouraging participation through practical examples, lively debates, physical activities and personal experiences. Allowing individuals to self-discover their own interests, beliefs and strengths in the subject area being covered.
Research
As an ethologist, my main research focus is in human-animal coexistence, social behaviours of solitary living animals and behavioural adaptations of species across varied habitats (hunting / food location techniques). I’ve spent countless hours in the field, performing in-person monitoring and surveying across many species of flora and fauna, as well as honing my skills in remote monitoring using GPS data, camera trapping and unmanned areal devices.
